Spetember 14, 2005 Feast–Triumph of the Cross

September 15, 2005

Walker Percy had a wonderful novel about New Orleans, Love in the Ruins.
Today our church CELEBRATES the triumph of the cross.

It seems appropriate that today I ran across this photo–among the caked mud, from some home….

Spetember 14, 2005 Heroes (a letter to the editor)

The following is a letter to the editor written by J. Simon of Lafayette, as printed in The Daily Advertiser on Tuesday, September 13, 2005.

HEROES MAKE WAY TOWARD NEW ORLEANS

In the quiet darkness of the night eastbound on I-10, long convoys of heroes travel toward their appointed destination with a single purpose. Help the helpless. They are the life blood flowing down the veins of I-10 back to the heart of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

Without a thought of personal safety, they head toward the center of destruction. The human spirit is alive and well in America. Though the roads are closed, their hearts are open and ready to give it their all. They don’t wait for orders to go; they eagerly await for the order to go.

New Orleans, known for its cuisine, is about to get a taste of America’s best.

These are not the elected officials, news media or camera hounds scampering for air time. They are not the politicians flying over the destroyed area to assess the damage. They are the ones that will remove the destruction and damage and return New Orleans, Southeast Louisiana, and the Gulf Coast back to its uniqueness.

To all of these heroes, we, the citizens of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, give you thanks for the jobs that each of you are doing.

J. Simon
